At 11:26pm on Feb 21 Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department and La Plata Volunteer Fire Department responded to a crash at the intersection of Crain Highway and Mitchell Road. An SUV had run under the rear end of a tractor trailer. On arrival responders could see there was at least one person trapped within the SUV.

Due to the severity of the accident a rescue squad was dispatched and arrived at 11:33pm. Further rescue units were called in when it was determined that the tractor trailer would have to be lifted off the SUV.
Rescue personnel used high lift jacks, a Hurst tool system, and cribbing to lift the trailer as quickly as possible in order to free a person trapped within the car. There turned out to be only one person trapped, and that driver was extracted by the rescue team after approximately 15 minutes.
Once free the injured driver was flown to Prince Georges General Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
It took almost two hours for the scene to be cleared by the last emergency teams and fire personnel.
