NEWBURG, Md. – On the night of August 18, 2024, emergency responders were called to the scene of a possible drowning near Captain John’s Crab House, located at 16215 Cobb Island Road.

The call came in at approximately 9:11 p.m., indicating that a 72-year-old man, who had been seen fishing at the end of the pier about an hour earlier, was missing. His hat was discovered floating in the water.

Police, fire, and rescue teams promptly arrived and initiated a search operation in the Potomac River. However, adverse weather conditions grounded helicopter support. Despite the challenges, within 30 minutes, crews located and recovered the victim, who was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the incident.

Further updates will be provided as they become available.
