DUNKIRK, Md. — Local business Dunkirk Hardware & Home Center announced online over the weekend that it planned to shutter the business in the next few weeks.
The store owners wrote in a July 26 post that they were making the challenging decision to close the hardware store but would continue with their other businesses, Deale Hardware and Jim’s Tool & Party Rental.
“This has been one of the hardest decisions our family has made,” the owners wrote. “Dunkirk Hardware has been more than a hardware store—it has been friendships, first jobs, home projects, community events, and countless memories we’ll carry forever.”
In a later post, store owners thanked the community for its support and the “outpouring of love.”
In social media messages exchanged with The BayNet, a representative from Dunkirk Hardware wrote again about the difficulty of this decision, stating that it was one of the hardest decisions they’ve had to make.
“The reality is that the economics of operating this location have changed dramatically. Sales have declined over the years while the costs of rent, payroll, insurance, utilities, and inventory have continued to increase. There simply came a point where we could no longer justify operating this location the way we believe it should be operated,” the representative wrote.
“This wasn’t about giving up, it was about making a responsible decision before the business reached that point. We’re incredibly proud of what this store has meant to the community over the past 14 years, and we’re deeply grateful to our customers and employees who made it possible.”
Dunkirk Hardware opened 14 years ago in its current location at 10745 Town Center Blvd., Unit 1, Dunkirk. The store will run a Farewell Sale starting July 27, offering 20% to 50% off throughout the store to help clear the shelves. The sale also will include special pricing on rental equipment, lawn equipment, fixtures and more.
Representatives from the store didn’t provide a firm timeline for when the store will officially close but will likely be within the next six weeks.
