An elderly Friendship man was killed Saturday when police say he turned in front of oncoming traffic on Route 260 at Jewell Road in Dunkirk.

Herbert N. Cooper, 84, suffered a heart attack following the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Calvert County Sheriff’s Officers responded to the scene at 7:34 p.m. for a report of a serious vehicle crash. Upon arrival, Deputy Todd Smith found Cooper, trapped in his vehicle in full cardiac arrest. Cooper’s wife, Alva R. L. Cooper, 77, was flown to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda on a Maryland State Police helicopter.

According to a preliminary investigation by police, Cooper was driving his 1996 Ford Crown Victoria south on Jewell Road. He had stopped for the flashing red signal and then proceeded to pull across Route 260 into oncoming traffic. A 2001 Chevy Malibu driven by Sandra M. Montgomery, 22, of Waldorf, was traveling west on Route 260 and struck Cooper in the driver side door.

Montgomery was taken to Calvert Memorial Hospital by the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department.

Cpl. James Wahlgren of the Crash Reconstruction Team also responded to the scene, and police said that the investigation is continuing.
