LA PLATA, Md. — A family safely escaped an early morning house fire in the Clarks Run neighborhood of La Plata after smoke detectors alerted occupants to flames spreading into the attic.
Firefighters were dispatched around 5:27 a.m. Monday, May 12, to the 1100 block of East Patuxent Drive for a reported odor investigation after residents reported hearing cracking sounds inside the walls and lights flickering throughout the home.
According to emergency communications, smoke alarms later activated as smoke conditions worsened inside the residence.
Crews arriving on scene found smoke showing from the roof and basement area of the home before locating a fire extending into the attic. Command officials reported the fire originated in a bathroom ceiling fan area before spreading into the attic space.

The American Red Cross was requested to assist the displaced family following the fire.
No injuries were reported.
