SOUTHERN MARYLAND — For generations of local farmers, gardeners and outdoor enthusiasts, the Farmers’ Almanac has been as dependable as sunrise — a time-honored guide for planting by the moon, tracking the weather and keeping in rhythm with the seasons. But after more than two centuries in print, the publication announced that its 2026 issue, released Aug. 8, 2025, will be its last.

Editors Sandi Duncan and Peter Geiger confirmed the news on Nov. 6, 2025, writing, “After more than 200 years of sharing a unique blend of weather, wit and wisdom, we’ve made the very difficult decision to write the final chapter of this historical publication. The 2026 Farmers’ Almanac will be our last edition.”

A Trusted Companion For Generations

Since its first printing in 1818, the Farmers’ Almanac has helped readers across America — including many here in Southern Maryland — plan their seasons around nature’s cycles. Local farms, from Calvert to St. Mary’s and Charles counties, have long turned to its pages for guidance on planting, harvesting and timing weather-sensitive work.

The 2026 edition, published on Aug. 8, 2025, continues that tradition with 182 pages of long-range forecasts, lunar phases, fishing calendars, gardening tips, recipes and home remedies. It also includes “best days” charts — a familiar favorite for those who plant, fish or even time their canning and pruning by the moon.

A Farewell Rooted In Gratitude

In their farewell letter, the editors thanked readers who kept the publication alive for more than two centuries. “Many of you grew up hearing your parents or grandparents quote from the Almanac, always having a copy nearby. We’re grateful to have been part of your life,” they wrote.

For Southern Maryland farmers who relied on the Almanac’s guidance each year, its loss marks the end of a quiet but meaningful ritual. From backyard growers to larger operations, many used its forecasts as a second opinion before modern weather apps existed — and often still do.

Looking Ahead

While the print publication will end after the 2026 edition, the Farmers’ Almanac website — FarmersAlmanac.com — will remain active through December 2025, allowing readers to browse forecasts and planting guides through next year. Copies of the 2026 issue are available online and at select retailers, including Amazon.

Though its pages will soon close, the Almanac’s legacy endures in every local field, garden and tide chart — reminding Southern Marylanders to watch for a red sky at night, plant when the daffodils bloom and carry forward the wisdom of the seasons.

  1. I received my 2026 edition (last) annual box earlier this year (sent out to hype us up for next growing season) unfortunately the announcement is today which just makes it seem more cold and lonely as friends are fleeting. Le sigh.
