LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A fundraiser has been launched for Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Chris Bell after a fire destroyed his home early Jan. 8, 2026, killing three pets and displacing multiple residents.
The fire was reported at 12:42 a.m. at a two-story home in the 42000 block of Fairgrounds Road after a passing motorist noticed flames. Firefighters arrived to find the single-family residence heavily involved and brought the blaze under control following an extended operation.
No occupants were home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. Two dogs and a cat died as a result of the incident. Three residents were displaced and are being assisted by family members.
The home was declared a total loss, with damage estimated at $400,000 to the structure and $150,000 to its contents, according to the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal. Smoke alarms and a fire alarm system were present, though investigators have not determined whether they activated.
The fire originated inside the home. The Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department led the response, with approximately 45 firefighters from surrounding departments assisting. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Bell, a career firefighter and longtime volunteer, lost all personal belongings in the fire. A fundraiser organized by PGFD IAFF Local 1619 has been established to assist with recovery efforts. As of Thursday, the campaign had raised $5,795.40 toward a $33,000 goal through 73 donations. The fundraiser notes Bell is focused on rebuilding life for his two young daughters following the loss.
