UPDATE – Chaptico House Fire Under Investigation, Three Injured Firefighters Home Recovering
MECHANICSVILLE, Md. – Firefighters and rescue personnel responded to a large house fire in the 36300 block of Notley Woods Lane in Chaptico on February 5, 2024, at approximately 10:44 a.m. All occupants of the home were able to escape.
Upon arrival, crews found the home showing smoke from the roof, with a fire originating in the basement and extension through the home. Firefighters immediately entered the building and began combatting the basement fire.

Surrounding departments and multiple fire boats were called to the scene to assist. However, due to heavy smoke and fire permeating the home, crews were forced to evacuate. During the evacuation, a mayday call was issued for a firefighter who had remained in the basement. The crew member, who had run out of oxygen, was quickly located, and the mayday call was subsequently cleared.
A second alarm was issued at 11:17 a.m., prompting additional crews to respond to the scene. Three firefighters were evaluated on the scene for potential injuries. Two firefighters with the Seventh District Volunteer Fire Department were transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. There were no additional injuries related to the mayday.

At 11:30 a.m., the fire was reported showing from the roof prompting another evacuation.
The fire was under control as of 12:15 p.m.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal was requested to the scene to investigate the cause. Updates will be provided as they become available.
