MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — A Washington, D.C., woman and a Clinton man were charged after Maryland State Police reported they stole toiletries from two Dollar General stores in St. Mary’s County, including items carried in a white trash can and a bright pink bag.

Celsie Chanee Edwards, 33, of Washington, D.C., and Patrick Joseph Young Jr., 31, of Clinton, were each charged with theft of property valued from $100 to under $1,500 and theft scheme from $100 to under $1,500 following the June 18, 2026, incidents.

According to charging documents, a Maryland State Police trooper responded around 7:30 p.m. to the Dollar General at 23488 Mervell Dean Road in Hollywood for a reported theft.

The complainant reported that a female and a male left the parking lot in a black Hyundai Elantra bearing a Washington, D.C., registration, according to charging documents.

Court documents state store employees reported seeing Young and Edwards inside the store together.

Charging documents state employees saw Young holding a red and white bag with an unknown number of items, while Edwards allegedly held a gold or tan bag with an unknown number of items. The two then left the store without paying.

A manager provided surveillance footage, according to charging documents. The trooper reported the footage showed Young and Edwards entering the store without items in their possession, obtaining a shopping cart and basket, and moving through the store while taking items from multiple shelves.

Charging documents state Young used a bag from the shelf and placed items inside it, while Edwards placed items into a gold bag. Both allegedly walked past the checkout counter without purchasing the items and left the store.

While the trooper was gathering descriptions of the suspects, St. Mary’s County deputies and Maryland State Police troopers saw a black Hyundai Elantra bearing the same registration leaving the Dollar General at 27300 Old Village Road in Mechanicsville, according to charging documents.

Police reported seeing Young and Edwards leave the Mechanicsville store. Young was carrying a white trash can that appeared to be full of toiletry items, while Edwards was carrying a bright pink bag that also appeared to contain toiletry items.

Charging documents state the two were found near a parked vehicle and began walking away when officers moved to intercept them. Officers gave commands to get on the ground, and both complied.

A Mechanicsville Dollar General employee reported that Young and Edwards had entered the store with no items in their possession and left moments later with the trash can and pink bag, according to charging documents.

The employee told police to place the items down and leave, which they did. Officers recovered an itemized list of stolen merchandise from the Mechanicsville and Hollywood Dollar General stores.

Charging documents state the total value of stolen items was $356.72.

Edwards and Young were transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. Court records show each posted a $1,000 unsecured personal bond June 19.

A trial is set for Aug. 6 in St. Mary’s County District Court.
