The Dr. James A. Forrest Career & Technology Center is hosting its first annual Soup Cook-off on from 3-7:30 p.m. Jan. 30, in the schoolโ€™s new state-of-the-art kitchen.ย  Cooking begins at 3 p.m., with tasting starting at 6 p.m.

Soups will be grouped into six categories, including cream based, seafood, red meat, poultry, vegetarian, and other.ย  The contest will be judged by expert chefs and community leaders. A โ€œPeopleโ€™s Choiceโ€ award will also be chosen by the public.

The contest is open to the first 20 individuals or teams of up to three that register.ย  Contestants will have use of the facility and will have access to necessary equipment, but must provide their own ingredients.

The contest has two age groups — a junior division for students and a senior division for adults. Contestant registrations are due by January 25, 2006.

Attendance at the event is open to the public. Those in attendance are invited to sample and judge the contest soups, and enjoy a house soup provided by the Forrest Centerโ€™s culinary arts students.

Admission tickets are available for $5 per adult, $3 per student, and children under four are free. All proceeds from the event will benefit The Forrest Center Social Fund and the SkillsUSA student organization.

This event will be recorded and broadcasted on local cable Channel 96, the school systemโ€™s educational television channel. For more information, registration, or sponsorship details, contact Mr. Ron Grosche at 301.475.0242, or by email at rkgrosche@smcps.org.
