Over the weekend, former Charles County Commissioner Robert J. Fuller, 68, passed away.ย  Arrangements have been made for Friday night.ย  He served on the Board of Commissioners from 1990-2006.ย  Charles County Commissioner President Candice Quinn Kelly (D) spoke about him on Tuesday.

โ€œI worked with Commissioner Fuller in โ€™05 and โ€™06,โ€ Kelly said.ย  โ€œHe was a colorful, dedicated commissioner.ย  He was loyal to our volunteers, as a firefighter himself.ย  He worked very hard for his constituents as a long serving commissioner.ย  He could be very colorful at times but he was a tough fellow and he brought that same toughness and sincerity in to his advocacy.

โ€œI think itโ€™s those bygone days when you were very grassroots.ย  He knew his men and they knew him.ย  They were different times.ย  The legacy is that, well, he was here for a long time.ย  He served his constituents because they kept re-electing him.ย  His legacy really is what he did to move forward with the volunteers and we were going through some tough times back then.ย  We didnโ€™t have paid staff and we had to move to some paid staff.ย  He really helped to negotiate that in a way that we continue to support our volunteers.โ€

He died Sunday due to complications from a long illness at his home in South Carolina.ย  There will be public viewings from 2-4pm and 6-8pm on Friday, December 9, 2011 with a service at 7pm on December 9thย at the Raymond Funeral Service in La Plata. ย The burial will be private.
