LA PLATA, Md. — A Waldorf man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he displayed a handgun during a road rage incident in Charles County earlier this month.
Andrew Bowie McCoy, 27, of Waldorf, has been charged with having a loaded handgun in a vehicle and second-degree assault in connection with the April 4, 2026 incident.
According to the statement of probable cause, officers responded around 10:31 a.m. to the area of Crain Highway and Hawthorne Road for a reported armed road rage incident.
Investigators say the incident began when another driver reported that McCoy pulled alongside his vehicle, displayed what appeared to be a handgun, and made threats during a confrontation at the intersection. The driver told authorities he feared for his life as the situation unfolded.
Police later located McCoy’s vehicle, described as a white Dodge Ram, and conducted a traffic stop in the area. According to charging documents, McCoy admitted there was a handgun inside the center console of the vehicle.
Officers recovered a Springfield XD handgun from the vehicle. Authorities noted that McCoy does not possess a wear-and-carry permit in the state of Maryland.
McCoy was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Charles County Detention Center. During questioning, he acknowledged being involved in a road rage incident but denied removing the firearm from the console.
Court records show McCoy was initially held without bond following his arrest on April 4, 2026. During a bail review hearing on April 6, 2026, Judge Kenneth A. Talley ordered his release on personal recognizance. The case was also heard before Judge Robert C. Wilcox during a bond review proceeding.
A trial is scheduled for May 19, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
