Many good Americans end the Fourth of July with a bang. A daytime picnic usually precedes the fireworks. A five-kilometer (K) race scheduled for July 4 in Southern Calvert County gives competitive runners and walkers a chance to start a new, healthy Independence Day tradition.

The Fifth annual Race to the Creek 5K Run and Walk will be held at Patuxent High School (PHS) starting at 8 a.m. The race is being held for the first time on the Fourth of July.

Race day registration will start at 7 a.m. with the entry fee on race day $30 for adults, $20 for students. Checks should be made payable to PHS. The high schoolโ€™s track and field team will benefit from the proceeds.

There will be a free kidsโ€™ race at 7:50 a.m.

The 5K race is part of the Chesapeake Bay Running Clubโ€™s (CBRC) โ€œGrand Prix Series.โ€

According to race director Dave Walser, the Race to the Creek is the PHS Track and Field programโ€™s largest fundraiser. Walser, who teaches health and physical education at PHS, is also the schoolโ€™s head coach for cross country, indoor track and girls spring track.
