WHO: Comptroller Peter Franchot
WHAT: Comptroller Franchot will present the Bright Lights Award for Charles County on Thursday morning to Mike Steele, founder, and owner of Motobriiz. Founded in 2013, Motobriiz harnesses the power of the wind to naturally and automatically oil motorcycle chains, a product that extends the life of motorcycle chains and saves bike owners money over time. The Bright Lights Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship celebrates innovation in the private and nonprofit sectors that strengthen Maryland’s economy, generates jobs and tax revenue and develops ways to better deliver services and products to the marketplace.
The Comptroller will then head to the College of Southern Maryland’s Hughesville regional campus where he will tour the new Center for Trades and Energy Training and meet with President Brad Gottfried. Mr. Franchot will present a proclamation to Dr. Gottfried in recognition of his achievements and leadership over 10 years before he retires in June.
Mr. Franchot’s final stop of the day will be at McKay’s Fine Foods & Pharmacy in Charlotte Hall, where he will meet with company owner Tommy McKay and purchase a regional delicacy, Southern Maryland stuffed ham, just in time for Easter. Jim and Marilyn McKay opened their first grocery store – Mac’s Groceries – in Hollywood in 1948. The Charlotte Hall store opened in 1983 and expanded in 1989 to better meet the needs of the region’s growing population. During the past 60 years, all eight of Jim and Marilyn McKay’s children have been involved in the family business.
