Every Week is Shark Week at the Calvert Marine Museum!
On Saturday, September 28 at 2:30pm, Dr. Bretton Kent will present a lecture titled โThe Rise and Fall of the Neogene Giant Sharksโ in the Calvert Marine Museum auditorium.ย There is no admission fee for the lecture.ย In the lecture, Dr. Kent will discuss the evolution and extinction of the many different species of giant sharks; a 20 million-year story that gave rise to megalodon โ one of the largest macro-predators this world has ever known.
Dr. Kent is an instructor at the University of Maryland at College Park where he teaches Animal Diversity and Biology of Extinct Animals and supervises the laboratory for Introductory Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior. He is a published author having written both Making Dead Oysters Talk:ย Techniques for Analyzing Oysters from Archaeological Sites and Fossil Sharks of the Chesapeake Bay Region the latter of which is a go-to guide for local fossil hunting enthusiasts.ย He has also been featured in a National Geographic special on Monster Sharks and has served as the director of a biology teacher training program for the state of Maryland.ย His present research, which he will talk about in Saturdayโs lecture, is directed at understanding the life and times of the highly diverse shark fauna that existed between 10 and 20 million years ago.ย

The museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Effective July 1, 2013, admission is $9.00 for adults, $7.00 for seniors and military with valid I.D., and $4.00 for children ages 5 โ 12; children under 5 and museum members are always admitted free.
