PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — A Lusby man is facing multiple criminal and traffic charges after Maryland State Police alleged he drove under the influence, struck a fuel pump at a Prince Frederick Wawa, refused field sobriety and chemical testing, and was later found in possession of suspected cocaine at the Calvert County Detention Center, according to court documents.

Charles Shoron Gross, 52, of Lusby, was charged in the District Court for Calvert County with possession of contraband in a place of confinement and possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than cannabis. He also received multiple traffic citations, including negligent driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired by alcohol, consuming alcohol in the passenger area of a motor vehicle, failure to provide insurance information following an accident and violating a license restriction. Court records show Gross was released on his own recognizance following his initial appearance.

According to the statement of probable cause, troopers responded at approximately 7:39 p.m. on July 5, 2026, to the Wawa at 305 Market Square Drive in Prince Frederick after Calvert County Emergency Communications received a report of a possibly intoxicated driver. The caller reported that the driver of a black GMC Yukon had pulled into the parking lot and sideswiped the No. 9 fuel pump.

When troopers arrived, they found Gross attempting to enter the Yukon. According to charging documents, Gross exhibited several signs of impairment, including the odor of an alcoholic beverage, bloodshot and glassy eyes, slurred speech, swaying while standing and difficulty maintaining his balance. Troopers also observed fresh damage to the SUV’s right front bumper and a fresh scrape on the left rear side of the fuel pump that appeared consistent with one another.

Investigators reported Gross repeatedly attempted to return to the restroom while they were speaking with him and struggled to understand basic questions. According to court documents, Gross denied driving the vehicle, instead telling troopers another individual had driven him to the Wawa.

Troopers advised Gross that a witness had reported seeing him driving the Yukon and striking the fuel pump. They also informed him that surveillance cameras throughout the parking lot had captured video of him driving and exiting the vehicle. According to charging documents, the store manager also confirmed Gross had been driving the SUV that struck the pump.

Troopers repeatedly asked Gross to perform standardized field sobriety tests, but he declined. Following his arrest for driving under the influence, Gross was advised of his rights and also refused to submit to a breath test, according to court records.

While conducting a secondary search of Gross at the Calvert County Detention Center, a deputy located a clear plastic bag containing 8.4 grams of a white powdery substance in Gross’s right front pants pocket. Based on his training and experience, the deputy identified the substance as suspected cocaine, according to the charging documents.

Gross is scheduled to stand trial on Aug. 20, 2026, in the Calvert County District Court.
