LA PLATA, Md. — In the latest change in the District 4 commissioner race, Charles County Commissioner Ralph Patterson is once again listed as an active candidate following disqualification, reinstatement and a brief withdrawal listing.

Patterson filed for reelection in June 2025 and was running unopposed for the District 4 commissioner seat. His candidacy was listed as disqualified March 23, 2026, after election officials determined a required financial disclosure filing had not been submitted on time. The issue prompted an emergency Board of Elections days later.

An emergency meeting of the Charles County Board of Elections was held March 25. Board members met for nearly four hours in closed session consulting with legal counsel before returning to open session and voting to reinstate previously disqualified candidates. Patterson was restored to eligible status following that vote.

Election records later showed Patterson listed as withdrawn from the race March 31, six days after the reinstatement decision.

Patterson later provided The BayNet with an updated Maryland State Board of Elections candidate listing on April 1, showing his status had been changed back to active.

  1. This Patterson guy has no business being allowed to run for a D4 commissioner’s seat. He can’t even correctly do the preliminaries to get on the ballot. D4 citizens deserve more than what he offers. A write in campaign would be in order.

  2. its been quite a year, 1st the shock of Steny stepping down, excuse me, not seeking reelection. We all know where we were when we heard that + now this.

  3. you’ve been following this, ‘aey, because usually you don’t look again when it says active
