GREAT MILLS, Md. — For the first time in 11 years, the Great Mills High School men’s track and field team are regional champions. At the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) 3A East Regional Championship, the team earned top marks in the 4×100 relay, 4×200 relay, 300-meter hurdles and 100-meter sprint.

“We had a fantastic season,” said Rashad Goldring, Great Mills’ head coach for outdoor track and field. “We won a lot of our meets. We met a lot of SMAC and regional champions.”

The last time Great Mills High had won at regionals, Goldring himself was a student-athlete. He said that the dry spell didn’t affect this winning team at all.

“We wanted to do the best that we can,” he said. “We hadn’t won in 11 years, when I ran for Great Mills. Winning again as a coach is a great feeling.”

Goldring said there had been worries that the event might get rained out, but in the end nothing could rain on Great Mills’ parade. Great Mills’ new track and field champions are Zachary Braden for the 100-meter sprint; Mobolaji Popoola for the 300-meter hurdles and high jump; Amon Hairston-Morgan, Jahdane Thaxter, Popoola and Braden for the 4×100 relay; and DeNario Girton Jr., Hairston-Morgan, Popoola and Braden for the 4×200 relay.

Goldring extends his congratulations to all the Great Mills High athletes who made it to regionals and wants to give a special shout-out to his regional champs as well as Treyvon Artis, Braden Gutenkunst, Vencent Logan and John Mercier. They, along with Hannah Jones from the women’s outdoor track and field team, qualified to compete at the MPSSAA Outdoor Track and Field State Championship this week (May 22-24).
