LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A Great Mills man has been convicted of assaulting a correctional officer during the intake process at the St. Mary County Detention and Rehabilitation Center after a March incident, according to court records.
Kwasi Nkokheli Jabar Agyeman, 37, of Great Mills, was found guilty of second-degree assault on a Department of Corrections employee following a bench trial in St. Mary’s County District Court before Judge Robert B. Riddle.
Authorities alleged Agyeman became highly agitated, verbally combative, and resisted officers as they attempted to conduct a routine search. Due to his behavior, correctional officers placed him inside a cell to safely complete the search, according to court records.
Charging documents state that as officers attempted to leave the cell, Agyeman allegedly shoved one correctional officer through the doorway. According to charging documents, he was then subdued and placed on a bunk. During the ensuing struggle, Agyeman’s head allegedly struck the officer, causing an injury above the officer’s left eyebrow.
Authorities further alleged Agyeman continued resisting staff, prompting officers to secure him in an emergency restraint chair to prevent further injury to staff members and himself.
Following the incident, Agyeman was charged with second-degree assault on a Department of Corrections employee. He was released the following day after posting a $1,500 unsecured personal bond.
Court records show Agyeman pleaded not guilty during his April 21 trial. After hearing the evidence, Judge Robert B. Riddle found him guilty.
Judge Riddle sentenced Agyeman to 90 days in jail.
