LEXINGTON PARK, Md. – Patuxent Habitat for Humanity (PHFH) recently broke ground on its 22nd home, marking another milestone in their mission to provide affordable housing for families in need. Founded in the spring of 2003 by John Wagner and his friends, PHFH addresses the housing needs in St. Mary’s and Calvert counties in Southern Maryland. Over the years, the organization has constructed, rehabilitated, and preserved homes, offering families a safe and secure place to live. PHFHโs impact extends beyond bricks and mortar, fostering a sense of community and stability for countless families.

Community Involvement: The Heartbeat of PHFH
The success of PHFH is deeply rooted in the extensive involvement of the community and local businesses. Partnerships with various local entities and a robust network of volunteers are the backbone of PHFHโs operations. Volunteers, including future homeowners, actively participate in the building processes, creating a collaborative and inclusive environment.
PHFHโs model emphasizes the importance of sweat equity, where future homeowners contribute to the construction of their homes. This not only reduces building costs but also instills a sense of pride and ownership among the families. By working alongside volunteers, homeowners gain valuable skills and experience that they can use to maintain and improve their homes in the future.
The organization also collaborates with local governments, businesses, and other nonprofits to address the broader issues of affordable housing and community development. These partnerships help to leverage resources and expertise, creating agreater impact than any single organization could achieve on its own.
