Herbert Shannon Doane, 92, of Brandywine, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2026, at the Veterans Home in Charlotte Hall, Maryland, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born April 29, 1934, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Ralph Lyman Doane, Sr., and Mossie Doane.

After graduating from high school, Herbert served four years on active duty in the United States Navy. He later attended the University of Tennessee, where he earned a bachelorโ€™s degree in accounting and business. While on temporary duty in Washington, DC, for his work with the Department of the Army Electronics Command at Fort Monmouth, Herbert met his wife, Carolyn. They were married on June 29, 1968. Herb went on to build a career of more than 32 years with the U.S. Customs Service as a computer specialist. His work took him to San Diego, California, where he helped to establish a computer network to support U.S. Customs inspectors at the border. After returning to the East Coast, Herb and Carolyn settled into their home in Brandywine, Maryland.

Herb was a devoted husband of 58 years to Carolyn and a loving father to his son, Andrew, and daughter, Krista. He was also an immensely proud โ€œGrandadโ€ to Jordan and Olivia.

Herb and Carolyn enjoyed annual trips to Tennessee and Maine to visit their large extended families, creating many cherished memories. He also enjoyed family vacations to Ocean City, the Outer Banks, and Florida, especially spending time with his grandchildren.

Herb was an engaging storyteller who loved sharing memories of growing up in Oak Ridge, the โ€œSecret City,โ€ along with many other stories from his life. Known for his sense of humor and quick wit, he enjoyed staying connected and exchanging jokes and emails with friends.

In later years, Herb and Carolyn could often be found sharing meals and playing dominoes with their dear friends and family.

Herb will be deeply missed by his loved ones. His love, generosity, and cherished memories will live in our hearts forever.

In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by his brothers, Ralph Doane Jr., Darrell Doane, and James Doane; his sisters, Norma Webber, June Smith, and Phyllis Ellenburg; and his son-in-law, Michael Berkut.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Doane; son, Andrew Doane (Rosemarie); daughter, Krista Berkut; grandchildren, Jordan Berkut and Olivia Berkut; sister, Doris Clark; sisters-in-law, Emily Doble and Priscilla Hodsdon (Alvin); and many nieces and nephews.

Service and burial will take place at the Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, Maryland, at a later date.
