ACCIDENT IN LA PLATA, MARYLAND

OXON HILL, Md. — A highway worker was killed late Saturday morning after being struck by a vehicle while setting up traffic control on a Capital Beltway ramp in Prince George’s County, according to Maryland State Police.

The crash occurred shortly before noon on April 25, 2026, along the inner loop of Interstate 495 at Maryland Route 414, near the St. Barnabas Road ramp.

The victim, identified as 40-year-old Robert Dempsey of Ellicott City, was working outside of his emergency vehicle placing cones when he was struck by a Mazda CX-5 traveling on the ramp. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Mazda, identified as Joshua Anderson, 41, of Fort Washington, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported.

The crash prompted significant lane closures in the area, with portions of the roadway shut down for nearly five hours as investigators processed the scene.

Troopers from the Maryland State Police College Park Barrack responded, along with personnel from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration and Prince George’s County emergency services.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the ongoing investigation. Charges are pending.
