ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – Gather friends and family on November 29 and 30 for an engaging experience at Historic St. Mary’s City (HSMC) as you explore the art of pickling, a traditional method of preserving and flavoring food from the past. This Hearth and Home event offers a lively journey into 17th-century culinary practices, enhancing your appreciation for today’s conveniences.
At HSMC, you’ll observe demonstrations focusing on food preservation and preparation, particularly pickling techniques. Food preservation has been essential to human development, enabling societies to transition from nomadic ways of life by maximizing seasonal resources and supporting long-distance travel. Nowadays, nearly all the food we eat involves some preservation method, from intricate additives to basic refrigeration. The museum invites you to delve into the history and appreciate traditional techniques like pickling, drying, salting, and brining.
Staff at the Woodland Indian Hamlet, Town Center, Maryland Dove, and the Plantation will also cook historical recipes over an open flame, filling the air with the enticing aroma of wood smoke. Take home a recipe booklet filled with all the new dishes you’ve discovered throughout the day to experiment with in your kitchen!
$10 for adults; $9 for seniors; $6 for youth (6-18); and free for those 5 years and younger and HSMC museum members).
