Republican Larry Hogan has defeated Democratic Lt. Gov. of Maryland Anthony Brown in the hotly contested race for governor that pulls a decidedly blue state closer to the red.

In a concession speech Brown said, “Tonight we fell short of our campaign goal but it does not diminish the work that you have done in your communities.”

With his wife and his running mate Ken Ulman and his family by his side, Brown congratulated Hogan and added, “Our journey as a people and a state continues.”

After the concession speech and a “gracious call” from Brown, Hogan addressed his supporters by saying, “What an historic night in Maryland. They said it couldn’t be done in Maryland but together we did it.”

Hogan congratulated Brown for his service to his country and to Brown and Gov. O’Malley for their eight years of service to the state.

Hogan also got a call from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. He called the Hogan victory the biggest upset in the country.

“This year we have sent a loud and clear message to Annapolis that they have heard all over the country,” Hogan said, calling it the largest mandate for change in Maryland  in 62 years.

“Tomorrow the people of Maryland finally get their state back,” Hogan said, with an agenda for jobs and small business and rolling back the taxes of the O’Malley-Brown Administration.

Incumbent Democratic Comptroller Peter Franchot and Democratic Attorney General candidate Brian Frosh won their respective races.
