CHELTENHAM, Md. — Volunteers and community members are preparing to honor America’s fallen heroes at Maryland Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery during a Wreaths Across America event on Dec. 14, 2024. At noon, the MD0638 – Wreaths for Cheltenham (MDCHVC) group will gather to lay remembrance wreaths on the graves of veterans interred at the Prince George’s County cemetery.

The effort is part of a nationwide initiative to remember and honor those who served in the U.S. armed forces while teaching future generations about the value of freedom. Local organizers hope to cover as many graves as possible through wreath sponsorships, which are priced at $17 each. For every two wreaths sponsored through the link, a third is donated, increasing the potential impact of community contributions.

Maryland Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery averages approximately 1,300 burials annually, holding services five days a week for veterans and their families. It remains one of the state’s most active veteran cemeteries, making the December event a meaningful tribute to the growing number of those laid to rest there.

“This is a community-driven effort,” said organizers with MDCHVC, noting that there is no government funding for the wreaths. “We rely on families, local businesses, and community members to ensure every hero is honored.”

The deadline for sponsorships is Dec. 3, 2024. Interested participants can sponsor wreaths, volunteer on Wreaths Day, or bring friends and family to the event.

By coming together, organizers hope to fulfill the Wreaths Across America mission: Remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach children the value of freedom.
