CHARLOTTE HALL, Md. — If there’s one thing that brings generations together like a bobber to a hook, it’s fishing. And come Saturday, May 3, families from across the region will reel in the fun at Gilbert Run Park during the much-anticipated Spring Fishin’ Buddies Derby.

With rods in hand and tackle boxes ready, teams made up of one adult (age 21 or older) and one child (ages 6 to 15) will cast their lines in friendly competition. The annual derby offers more than just bragging rights — participants compete in two age divisions for both the biggest and most catches of bluegill, crappie, and bass. But that’s not all. Anglers who manage to hook a trout or catfish can also vie for special recognition.

Whether you’re more of a shore caster or prefer floating out on the water, the event keeps things fair by separating bank anglers from those in boats. Organizers emphasize that each child must be paired with one adult — no doubling up. Registration is now open online and must be completed in advance.

As someone who’s covered more than a few local events with a notepad instead of a fishing pole, I can say: this one’s got the kind of community charm you can’t fabricate. Watching kids light up over their first catch or seasoned anglers pass on tricks of the trade — it’s the sort of day that reminds you why small-town traditions still matter.

Mark your calendars, grab your favorite bait, and don’t forget to register the kids first — adult teammates will be added during the sign-up process.
