FIFTH DISTRICT, MD – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) observed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at events throughout the Fifth District, including the St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s 13th annual prayer breakfast, the Charles County NAACP’s 22nd annual prayer breakfast, and the Collective Empowerment Group’s worship service in Landover.

“I was honored to travel around the Fifth District today and celebrate the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” said Congressman Hoyer. “Today serves as an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the work of Dr. King, and stand up for civil rights and equal economic opportunities for our fellow citizens. We must continue the important work of protecting voting rights, increasing access to quality education, and ensuring all Americans have quality, affordable health care. As we honor Dr. King, let us rededicate ourselves to the important work he and so many of our civil rights leaders, such as my dear friend Rep. John Lewis, championed for our nation. Let us continue the work of Dr. King to ensure all Americans have a voice in our democracy.”

Congressman Hoyer also encourages Fifth District residents to participate in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service by volunteering in the community. The MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.”
