Leonardtown, MD –ย The 21st running of the Race For Hospice will be held Saturday morning, April 9 in Leonardtown. The eventโ€”consisting of 5 kilometer (K) and 10 K runs, and a 5K โ€œfun walkโ€โ€”begins and ends at the St. Maryโ€™s County Governmental Center.

Medals in several male and female age categories will be awarded to top finishers. A team competition called The Defenderโ€™s Cup will highlight the 5K run.
Both the hardcore runners and the casual walkers converge at the starting line, with the race starting at 8:30 a.m. Participants with small children are allowed to push strollers and dog-owners may be accompanied on the trek by their leashed canines.

Awaiting all participants at the finish line will be the eventโ€™s โ€œworld famous brunch.โ€ Last yearโ€™s repast included stuffed ham and pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, fruit, hot tomato bisque, pastries, and yogurt. There was also hot coffee and plenty of water.

The event benefits Hospice of St. Maryโ€™s County. The first race benefitting the organization was held March 24, 1996. It took place at St. Maryโ€™s Ryken High School and was billed as the โ€œFirst Annual Maryland Day Run and Fun Walk.โ€ The event was moved to the Governmental Center the following year. In 2005, organizers decided to hold the race in April.

Since 1996, the race has raised over $600,000 for Hospice of St. Maryโ€™s County. In addition to registration fees from participants, funds are raised through sponsorships. The 2016 event currently has nine โ€œSilverโ€ sponsors, seven โ€œBronzeโ€ sponsors and 15 sponsors designated as โ€œFriends of Hospice.โ€

Pre-registration is recommended and anyone who has registered before the race will be able to pick up their packets Friday, April 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Leonard Hall Drill Hall.

There is โ€œsame dayโ€ registration available April 9 from 7 to 8 a.m.

Parking is available at the Governmental Center and MedStar St. Maryโ€™s Hospital. Carpooling to the Run For Hospice is greatly encouraged.

Passing motorists and Leonardtown residents should note a new race route implemented two years ago will significantly cut down traffic delays in the area. However, drivers should be aware of runners on the road and expect delays from about 8:30 until 10:30 a.m.
