WALDORF, Md. — A Hyattsville man was arrested after Charles County officers responded to a reported assault in progress at a Waldorf apartment complex and found several adults arguing in a stairwell, according to charging documents.

Jerrell Jeffrey Tyson, 35, of Hyattsville, is charged with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct.

Officers with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded around 3:02 p.m. on May 30, 2026, to the 3000 block of Gallery Place in Waldorf for a reported assault in progress.

When officers arrived, they found multiple adults in the stairwell involved in a verbal altercation, arguing and yelling, according to charging documents. Police said the disturbance affected the peace of several surrounding apartments.

The subjects involved informed officers that the matter was a family issue.

Tyson, who was identified through a law enforcement database, allegedly approached an officer in a fast and aggressive manner with his fists balled and in a fighting stance, according to charging documents.

Tyson was arrested by another officer while other people involved in the incident fled on foot, charging documents state.

Police said Tyson continued yelling and causing a disturbance while being escorted to a marked cruiser. Several residents then came outside and focused their attention on the incident, according to the report.

After a brief period of passive resistance, Tyson was placed in a marked cruiser and transported to the Charles County Detention Center.

While interacting with Tyson, an officer reported that he appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance based on observations that included losing balance, swaying, dry mouth, slurred speech and drowsy eyes.

Court records show Tyson was released on recognizance following a May 31, 2026, bail review.

A trial is set for July 17, 2026, in Charles District Court.
