Schools were closed Monday afternoon and residents continued to clean up after Hurricane Irene.
Despite damage on Cobb Island and other coastal areas, Charles County fared much better than Calvert and St. Marys County. Bel Alton/Newton Rd. and Billingsley Rd. both reopened Monday afternoon. Bel Alton/Newton Rd. was closed Saturday Night after a tree fell on power lines. Billingsley Rd. was closed on Sunday due to high water.
Schools were closed Monday because of power outages and road closures, but they are scheduled to open for instruction Tuesday morning.
Most areas that were without power on Sunday have had power restored. As of Monday evening, fewer than 10,000 people were without power in Charles County.
The Charles County Department of Emergency Serives distributed ice and bottled water to residents today at the Charles County Government Building in La Plata.
