Lexington Park, MD — Republican St. Mary’s County District 1 Commissioner candidate Tom Jarboe has been holding a series of small “Meet and Support” events at the homes of supporters. The events are intended to draw neighbors in to learn a little more about his candidacy. He has one scheduled for Wednesday, October 28th at the home of “Stu” and Peter Egli at 47270 West St. Mary’s Manor Road in Drayden.
Several dozen people attended another Meet and Support event on Thursday October 23rd at the home of Tom and Shonna Meiser in Esperanza Farms. To attendee’s in the Meiser’s living room, Jarboe said, “I think I am an okay politician but I will be a good commissioner.”
Jarboe said he observed that three commissioner seats were up for grabs and he was concerned about who would fill the seats that could represent a majority vote. He said of the decisions to fill those seats, “I didn’t want it to be a popularity contest.”
“We need someone with business acumen,” he said about his background of owning two businesses and having to sign checks every day. He noted he also has a law enforcement background, with four years in drug enforcement, that was good experience for the job that includes funding the sheriff’s budget.
Jarboe is a fiscal conservative. He said, “We have to be smart on how we spend our money going forwards.”
Democratic candidate for St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney Shane Mattingly attended the event and also spoke He challenged everyone to vote. “We get the government we deserve,” he said.
Both Jarboe and Mattingly are graduates of Leadership Southern Maryland and Mattingly went on to participate in Leadership Maryland. Jarboe said that very few politicians are also leaders and the local and state leadership programs train citizens to be leaders.
Jarboe’s opponent is Democrat Merl Evans. Mattingly is challenging incumbent Rick Fritz.
The Early Voting polling places are open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day through Thursday, October 30th. General Election day is Tuesday, November 4.
