Solomons, MD – Solomons’ 19th annual Jingle Bell Run for the Arthritis Foundation was shrouded in an early-morning, early-December fog that a horde of mad-dashers—many wearing Yuletide costumes—cut through like a Holiday party angel food cake. While there was plenty of fog, there was nothing hazy about who was the fastest man in the 5 kilometer (K) race. William Allen, 26 of St. Leonard—fresh off his razor-thin win at the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot in Prince Frederick—bolted to a first-place finish with a time of 16 minutes and 19 seconds. The battle for second-place was much closer, as a pair of 16-year-old speedsters—Kevin McDanal of Mechanicsville and Jack O’Brien, finished second and third respectively. McDanal’s chip time was 19 minutes and 36 seconds, while O’Brien logged a time of 19 minutes and 38 seconds. The race’s top female finisher was Parker O’Brien, 13, with a time of 20 minutes and 20 seconds.
The 5K, which has grown significantly during its history, is part of the longest-standing holiday-themed race series in the world. The Arthritis Foundation benefits from the generosity and fund-raising skills of the race participants and participation from corporate sponsors. The past several years Holiday Inn Solomons has been the starting and finishing point for the event.
Kelly Imhoff, who along with her husband Greg, has managed the race throughout its history, presided over the post-race ceremony, giving shout-outs to an army of volunteers. Special recognition was given to county resident Shannon Ward, who updated ceremony attendees on her ongoing fight with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and her determination to play competitive soccer. Ward’s team raised over $5,000 for the foundation.
Imoff told TheBayNet.com that the Solomons 5K has raised over $35,000 this year and over $350,000 for the Arthritis Foundation during its 19-year history.
