La Plata, MD – People all ages gathered early Sunday afternoon, Nov. 4 in the Town of La Plata to salute the regionโs military veterans. The townโs annual paradeโSalute to Veteransโbegan in the parking lot shared by the Charles County Court system and county government on Washington Avenue, traveled briefly on Charles Street (Route 6) and proceeded south on LaGrange Avenue, past a reviewing stand and the town hall before ending the route on Queen Anne Street.

Parade units included Scout packs and troops, cheerleaders, the local volunteer fire department, law enforcement, town and county elected officials, motorcycles, fraternal organizations and classic cars. By far, the largest number of participants were from Charles County Public Schools. Members of CCPSโ various Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) marched in lockstep and called out cadence while spectators waved small American flags.
The Salute to Veterans parade is traditionally held the Sunday before Nov. 11. In 2018, Veterans Day falls on a Sunday. However, several of the units will also be participating in the Leonardtown Veterans Day Parade Nov. 11. Leonardtownโs parade is the largest Veterans Day parade in Maryland.
