UPDATE 12 p.m.:

A large barn at the St. Mary’s City Vistor’s Center caught fire about 11:15 a.m., Jan. 2. No injuries have been reported. There were chickens that perished in the blaze. A bunch of farm equipment was also lost. The barn has been completely destroyed and has been burnt to the ground.

The cause of the fire is believed to be from a heat source used to warm the chickens.

Due to no water supply in St. Mary’s City, multiple tanker units were called to help battle the blaze. Units from Calvert County helped to fill in at stations in St. Mary’s in case of another fire.

Fire crews are still on the scene battling hot spots as well as some nearby brush fires.


Fire Crews from all over southern St. Mary’s County are rushing to a barn fire on Hogeboom Lane and Rosecroft Road in St. Mary’s City. First responders on the scene report the barn is fully involved and farm animals may be threatened.
