Leonard Realty, owned and operated by Ron Leonard, his wife Theresa, and their daughter Susan Sokoloff, has helped families buy and sell homes in Southern Maryland for over 40 years.
Ron and Theresa Leonard both attended St. Mary’s College and settled down in St. Mary’s County in 1970 right after they got married. They took over the realty business in 1973.
“We know the county well,” said Theresa Leonard. “We’ve seen it grow. So that’s a plus when you’re selling real estate to know the area.”
Sokoloff joined the family business eight years ago and works full time with the company. She often lists properties for sale in Charles County in addition to St. Mary’s County.
Both Ron and Theresa Leonard have served on several committees. Ron Leonard was president of the Southern Maryland Association of Realtors at one time and Theresa Leonard is currently the chairperson for the community relations committee.
This particular realty company is different from those of corporate size in several ways; something that the Leonard family takes particular pride in is giving clients that “personal touch”.
“The service is a little different with a small company,” said Ron Leonard. “You get closer to your clientele and they expect more from you. There’s no pressure. A person can come in and look and find what they want. We have a good rapport with the public. Our clients come back to us.”
Leonard Realty handles each of their rentals themselves, rather than hiring someone else to manage the property.
The Leonard family also strives to make their clients feel comfortable throughout the buying and selling process.
“The layout of the building is a relaxed atmosphere,” said Ron Leonard. “(We use a) round table so that everybody is equal. It works well that way so there’s no pressure (to buy or sell).”
When entering the office clients receive a friendly greeting. The décor is that of a home rather than an office which is not often found in larger organizations.
