LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — A Lexington Park man is facing multiple assault charges after deputies say he allegedly confronted a woman with a crowbar during a disturbance that escalated into a physical altercation Thursday night.

According to charging documents filed in St. Mary’s County District Court, deputies responded around 10:06 p.m. on May 15 to a residence on North Essex Drive for a reported domestic disturbance. On arrival, deputies identified the suspect as 45-year-old Raymond Venson Rainwater, who was reportedly agitated and inside the home with two other adults and a juvenile.

The incident unfolded when one resident of the home went to the basement after hearing a disturbance. Upon entering, she observed Rainwater allegedly approaching her aggressively while holding what she believed to be a knife, described as making a slicing motion. The juvenile at the home intervened and restrained Rainwater, rendering him unconscious until deputies arrived and secured the scene. No injuries were reported.

The juvenile later told law enforcement the object he held was a crowbar, not a knife, as initially believed.

He was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center and charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault and resisting or interfering with arrest.

According to court records, first-degree assault carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. The second-degree assault charge carries a potential sentence of 10 years and/or a $2,500 fine, while resisting arrest is punishable by up to three years in jail and/or a $5,000 fine.

Rainwater is being held without bond. The case remains open.
