Great Mills High School Graduate Nicolas J. Juron was one of three U.S. Navy sailors killed Dec. 13 when their helicopter crashed off the coast of Colombia.
Naval Station Mayport Public Affairs office reports pilot Lt.j.g. Juron, 25, was part of the baseโs Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (Light) (HSL) 48. The group of sailors was conducting counter-narco terrorism operations in international waters at the time of the crash.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Search and rescue operations officially ended at approximately 6:15 p.m. Dec. 13, after an extensive search in the vicinity of the debris field by U.S. and Colombian navy air and surface units.
The other men killed in the crash were Lt. Christopher H. Snyder, 28, a pilot, of Plainsboro, N.J., and Aviation Warfare Systems Operator 2nd Class John N. Kaye III, 22, of Waterloo, Iowa.
