The Lexington Park Rotary Club awarded $37,750 in scholarships to seven St. Maryโ€™s County high school seniors. St. Maryโ€™s County Schools superintendent, Dr. Michael Martirano, attended the award luncheon at the J.T. Daugherty Center to acknowledge the outstanding academic achievements of the students and gave recognition to Lexington Park Rotary Club.

Each year, Lexington Park Rotary Club gives about one-third of its total annual fundraising amount through the scholarship program. It is one of the largest scholarship award programs in St. Maryโ€™s County. This year, the club reviewed over 170 applications. Most of the applications came through St. Maryโ€™s County Business, Education and Community Alliance (BECA) scholarship application process.

โ€œThe scholarships we give are in line with Rotary Internationalโ€™s greater effort to promote education in our community, reward academic accomplishments, and encourage higher education. Our club volunteers work hard to raise the money every year and this is a great program to show just how proud we are of our St. Maryโ€™s County students.โ€ Larry Koppelberger, President of Lexington Park Rotary Club.

For 2008, the club has awarded:

  • – $10,000 four-year scholarships to Brittney Gifford of The Kingโ€™s Christian Academy and Michael Schultz of Leonardtown HS
  • – $8,000 four year scholarship to Andrew Rohland of Great Mills HS
