Hello Sports Fans, Iโm Buddy Long. And this is the Monday August 19th edition of Southern Maryland Sports.
Baltimore Orioles:
After splitting 8 games on the road last week, then losing the home opening series to Colorado Friday, the Baltimore Orioles bats got hot, enroute to 2 consecutive wins over the Rockies, including Sundays 7-2 rout. Chris Davis hit his league leading 45th home run of the season, going 4 for 5, while Adam Jones added a 2 run shot as part of his 3 hit day. Scott Feldman earned his first victory in a month, lasting into the seventh inning on the mound. Davisโs homer, a 2 run shot, came off of Edgmer Escalona in the eighth inning.
Baltimore will now dive into AL East play with a 3 game home stand with the Tampa Bay Rays, starting tonight at Camden Yards. Chris Tillman will be on the mound for the Orioles, while the Rays will counter with David Price. The Orioles are 67-56, 4.5 behind the Boston Redsox, 3.5 games back of Tampa Bay.
Washington Nationals:
The Washington Nationals dropped 2 of 3 games in their weekend road series with the NL East Division leading Atlanta Braves, the final on Sunday 2-1. The Nats have now lost 3 of 4 after winning 5 straight. Bryce Harper had 2 hits for the Nats while Gio Gonzalez had another strong pitching performance on the mound, but the team couldnโt muster any run production. Washington drops to 60-63 on the season, fifteen and a half games behind the Braves. The Nats hit the road for a 7 game trip, starting today with 4 games at the Chicago Cubs, then a 3 game weekend set with the Kansas City Royals.
Southern Maryland Blue Crabs:
Jeremy Owns had a game winning single in the 9th, helping the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs break a 3 game losing streak and take the finale in the series with the Camden River Sharks Sunday in New Jersey. Gaby Hernandez also had an excellent day on the mound, pitching 6 solid innings as the Crabs improved to16-27, 7 games out of first in the Liberty Division. Southern Maryland begins a 7 game home stand, starting tonight at Regency Furniture Stadium with a 3 game series with the league leading Sugar Land Skeeters, followed by 4 games at home against the Bridgeport Blue Fish.
Washington Redskins:
Itโs a Prime Time Monday Night matchup for the Washington Redskins tonight at Fed Ex Field as the Pittsburgh Steelers come to town for Pre Season Game #2. Kirk Cousins will again start for the team at QB while Robert Griffin III will continue his rehabilitation by taking 11 on 11 drills each day. Training Camp broke Friday afternoon in Richmond, Virginia as the team will play out the balance of Pre Season at Redskins Park in Ashburn. Game time tonight is 8pm.
Baltimore Ravens:
The Ravens continue training camp today on the heels of their lackluster 27-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons Thursday Night at M&T Bank Stadium. Baltimore will again be in action Thursday at home against Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers.
