Prince Frederick, MD โ€“ A Calvert County man charged with assaulting and stabbing his mother in May 2015 was sentenced to 25 years in jail Thursday, Aug. 11.

Defendant Darrell Lee Adams, 39 of Owings was sentenced in Calvert County Circuit Court by Judge Mark Chandlee. The judge suspended 10 years of the sentence, adding five years of supervised probation. Adams also received a 10-year sentence for violation of probation regarding a 2011 conviction for a March 2010 bank robbery, according to a court summary.

Chandlee is recommending Adams, who has mental issues, serve his sentence at Patuxent Institution.

According to a Calvert County Sheriffโ€™s Office report, on May 17, 2015 Adams is alleged to have stabbed his mother in the abdomen and arms during an argument. Police said other members of the family were present and tried to stop the attack. The 58-year-old victim was flown to Prince Georgeโ€™s Hospital Center with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries.

Court records indicated that a month after the incident authorities found Adams incompetent to stand trial. In January of this year Adamsโ€™ attorney entered a plea of not criminally responsible. In April Adams pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree assault.

During the most recent hearings on the case, Adams was represented by Public Defender Mary Katharine Fowler. Calvert County Stateโ€™s Attorney Laura Martin prosecuted the case on behalf of the state.
