CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. — On March 19, 2025, at approximately 7:02 p.m., a routine traffic stop at the Fastop located at 8054 Bayside Road in Chesapeake Beach, Calvert County, led to the arrest of a Virginia man on firearms and drug charges.
Deputies conducted a stop on a 2009 black Ford Fusion bearing Virginia registration plates. The driver and sole occupant, identified as Toney Robert Key Jr., 22, of King George, Virginia, reportedly appeared nervous, fidgety, and avoided eye contact during the encounter. Upon questioning, Key disclosed that there was a firearm located in the back seat.
During a search of the vehicle, deputies recovered a black AR-15-style pistol loaded with a tan magazine containing 25 rounds of 5.56 ammunition. The firearm was located on the floorboard behind the driver’s seat. Additionally, deputies discovered an orange pill bottle containing a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine residue in the driver’s side door pocket.
Key was advised of his Miranda rights by Detective DeLeon and acknowledged ownership of the pill bottle. The suspected cocaine was sent to the Maryland State Police for laboratory testing.
After consultation with the Maryland Gun Center, authorities classified the firearm as a pistol and recommended charges of loaded handgun in a vehicle and handgun in a vehicle.
Key faces charges including loaded handgun in a vehicle, handgun in a vehicle, and possession of cocaine. If convicted, he could face penalties including fines up to $5,000 and incarceration for up to five years.
