LOVEVILLE, Md. — An unusual call came into St. Mary’s County officials this week: an emu was spotted wandering along Point Lookout Road in Loveville.
The large, flightless bird was safely captured on Monday, Aug. 18, and transported to the St. Mary’s Animal Adoption and Resource Center, where it is being held on a stray hold. The emu appears to be healthy despite looking slightly agitated after its roadside adventure.
This is not the first time an emu has made headlines in Southern Maryland. A similar case was reported recently in Charles County, raising questions about whether the birds are becoming unexpected escape artists in the region.
County officials are now trying to locate the owner of the animal. Anyone who recognizes the bird or knows its owner is asked to contact the adoption center at 301-475-8018 for reclaim.
