WALDORF, Md. — Macy’s has confirmed plans to close 66 stores nationwide as part of its “Bold New Chapter” strategy, which focuses on sustainable growth by investing in high-performing locations. While stores in the Harford Mall in Bel Air and Security Square in Baltimore are among those slated for closure, the Macy’s in Waldorf will remain open and will not be impacted by the announced changes.
The closures are part of a broader plan, announced in February 2024, to shutter approximately 150 underperforming stores over a three-year period. The company will instead focus on enhancing its remaining 350 “go-forward” locations through fiscal 2026.
“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” said Tony Spring, chairman and CEO of Macy’s, Inc., in a statement.
Macy’s credits its investment in its initial group of pilot stores, dubbed the “First 50,” with boosting sales for three consecutive quarters and achieving record customer satisfaction. These improvements are part of the company’s push to offer seamless in-store and online shopping experiences.
