BRANDYWINE, Md. — A 50-year-old man was airlifted to a trauma center Sunday morning after a .22-caliber rifle was reportedly dropped and accidentally discharged in Charles County.
Emergency personnel responded shortly after 11:30 a.m. July 26, 2026, to the 1600 block of Wilkerson Place in Brandywine for a reported gunshot wound.
The 911 caller, who identified himself as a firefighter and EMT at the scene, reported that the rifle had been dropped and discharged, striking the man in the upper leg near the femur.
Because of the location of the wound, a medevac was prelaunched while fire and EMS crews responded. Firefighters also established a nearby landing zone for the arriving helicopter.
Responders evaluated and treated the man before transferring him to Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 2.
Trooper 2 flew the patient to UM Capital Region Medical Center with serious injuries.
No additional injuries were reported.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
