At 3 a.m. Dec. 10, TFC W. Goldston of the Leonardtown barracks responded to National Circle, Lexington Park, for a reported stolen vehicle complaint.

The owner of the vehicle identified himself as Bryan William Downs, 31, of Lexington Park. Downs stated that someone had stolen his vehicle when it was left in his driveway with the keys in the ignition.

After a broadcast for the stolen vehicle was given, Deputy Somerville observed the vehicle being operated in the St. Maryโ€™s Square parking lot. TFC Goldston responded to St. Maryโ€™s Square and contact was made with the occupants.

The passenger advised that Downs had given him permission to use the vehicle. Downs responded to the scene and stated that he had not given the subject permission to use the vehicle.

TFC Goldston became suspicious because during the initial contact with Downs he only referred to a possible suspect by a nickname and advised he did not know him personally.

As the investigation continued Downs admitted to knowing the suspect and he did in fact give him permission to drive the vehicle.

Downs was arrested, taken to the St. Maryโ€™s County Detention Center, charged with Filing a False Report, and held pending a bail review.
