The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is investigating a drowning death in the Potomac River at Point Lookout State Park in Scotland, Md.

Rescue crews from Lexington Park and Ridge responded to report of a possible drowning at 11175 Point Lookout Road near the south beach pavilion area on Aug. 21 around 2:40 p.m.

According to Sgt. Art Windemuth, a spokesman for the DNR, a Hispanic male between the age of 18- 20, identified as Favian Martinez, was swimming in a lifeguarded section of the Potomac River in waist deep water when the swimmer experienced some sort of difficulty, began screaming for help and disappeared under the water. Martinez’s body was recovered approximately 5-10 minutes later and CPR was initiated. Martinez was then transported to St. Mary’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:40 p.m. on Aug. 21.

Martinez was in the company of a cousin while at the state park. The exact age of Martinez is unknown. Martinez was an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, currently residing in Frederick, Md.ย and did notย have proper identification on him.

The DNR continues to investigate.
