NANJEMOY, Md. โ€” A man was rescued Monday night after falling into a deep hole believed to be part of an old septic tank in Charles County.

Emergency crews were called around 9:00 p.m. on June 1, 2026, to the 11000 block of Ishine Place in Nanjemoy for a report of a person trapped in a confined space.

The man had been walking outside when he fell into the opening. The caller told dispatchers they did not know how deep it was, but he had not touched the bottom.

The man was hanging onto the wall of the hole while crews responded. Emergency personnel requested a confined-space rescue response and technical rescue units because the opening was believed to be an old septic tank. Responders also reported a foul odor in the area.

Fire and rescue crews brought a ladder to the opening and used a harness during the rescue. The man was removed from the septic tank area at about 9:30 p.m.

He was evaluated by emergency medical services and transported to Charles Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
