Dunkirk, MD – Calvert will get a major retail store in the north end of the county in mid-August. On Thursday, Aug. 2 officials from Marshalls corporate headquarters in Framingham, MA announced their newest location in the Shoppes at Apple Greene will hold a grand opening Thursday, Aug. 16. The opening day festivities will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. prior to the opening, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“Our newest store in Dunkirk will offer an ever-changing selection of high-quality, on-trend, and brand-name merchandise at the amazing prices that Marshalls is known for,” stated Marshalls President Tim Miner. “Our buyers create a broad and exciting mix that offers exceptional values for the entire family, and we’re excited to bring this experience to a new neighborhood. With thousands of new items delivered to our stores every day, we know our shoppers will find values that are surprising and unexpected every time they shop.”

As part of the grand opening ceremony, Marshalls officials will present a $10,000 check to End Hunger in Calvert County. “We are proud to welcome Marshalls into Calvert County,” the Rev. Robert P. Hahn of Chesapeake Church told TheBayNet.com. “This grant shows their desire to be active contributors to the betterment of our community. Families will eat tonight because of Marshalls generosity. They embody the value of ‘give where you live.’ This is the Calvert spirit.”
Marshalls is one of two anchor stores for the Shoppes at Apple Greene. Harris Teeter is also expected to open in August. The new shopping center is located on Ward Road. The Marshalls store is approximately 22,000 square feet. The store’s regular hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays.

“In addition to providing a new shopping option for local residents, the new store plans to add approximately 60 full and part-time jobs to the area,” the company press release stated. Marshalls spokeswoman Katie Babb told TheBayNet.com that a majority of the Dunkirk staff will be new employees—or “associates”—with very few transfers from other locations.

Babb explained the selection of End Hunger of Calvert County as the nonprofit receiving the large donation was “because of their strong commitment to the Dunkirk community.” Marshalls’ officials also envision End Hunger in Calvert County as an opportunity for store employees’ volunteerism. Marshalls also has national and local partnerships with charitable organizations around the country including Junior Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), Alzheimer’s Association and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Marshalls is one of the nation’s leading off-price family retailers with more than 1,000 stores spanning 47 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico. The retailer opened its first store more than 40 years ago.
