ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Governor Larry Hogan today announced that Maryland’s statewide COVID-19 positivity rate has reached a new all-time low of 3.27% and the daily positivity rate has fallen to a record low of 2.12%. The governor also announced that total COVID hospitalizations have dropped 26% in the month of August, to 435, and the state is reporting its lowest number of new deaths since March 28.

“Thanks to our early and aggressive actions and the continued vigilance of the people of Maryland, all of our key health metrics continue to steadily decline and we are doing much better than most of the rest of the country,” said Governor Hogan. “I want to thank the people of our state for helping us keep Maryland safely open for business by practicing physical distancing, wearing masks, and avoiding travel to hotspots.”

Seven-Day and Daily Positivity Rates Fall to Record Lows. Maryland’s seven-day average positivity rate fell to 3.27% today, the lowest level reported since the pandemic began. The daily positivity rate is also a record low today at 2.12%. This is the third straight day that under 3% of tests have come back positive. The statewide positivity rate has been under 5% since June 25.

Total Hospitalizations Decline to 435, Down 26% in August. There are 435 total current hospitalizations—a decrease of 40 in the last 24 hours. There are 106 ICU beds in use—a decrease of 9—the lowest level since March 29. Hospitalizations are down 26.5% since August 1, and ICU levels are down 32.5% since July 25.

Lowest Number of New Deaths Reported Since March 28. Today, the state reported 2 new confirmed deaths—the lowest number of new deaths reported since March 28.
Positivity Rate Among Marylanders Under 35 Down 40% Since July 23. Over the last several weeks, state health officials have focused on addressing rising infection rates among young people. The positivity rate among Marylanders under 35 has steadily declined over the last three weeks, more than 40% since July 23, to 4.05%. The positivity rate among Marylanders over 35 is 2.83%.

Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Howard County, Prince George’s County Report Record Low Positivity Rates, Positivity Rate Below 3.5% in 19 of 24 jurisdictions.

• A number of major jurisdictions are reporting record-low positivity rates, including:

  • Anne Arundel (2.31%)
  • Baltimore City (4.02%)
  • Baltimore County (3.41%)
  • Howard County (2.95%)
  • Prince George’s (5.23%)

• The positivity rate for 19 of the state’s 24 jurisdictions is below 3.5%, and the positivity rate for 23 of the 24 jurisdictions is below 5%. Only Prince George’s (5.23%) is above 5%.

More than 1.6 Million Tests Conducted, 19.2% of Population Tested. In total, Maryland has now conducted 1,645,642 COVID-19 tests, including 28,860 tests over the last 24 hours. 1,157,612 Marylanders have now been tested for COVID-19, representing 19.2% of the state’s population.
