MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — A Mechanicsville man is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly launching a brutal knife attack on his father and another family member during a domestic incident that unfolded July 15.
According to charging documents filed in District Court, deputies responded to a home on Patuxent Drive in Mechanicsville for a report of a double stabbing. Upon arrival, officers found one victim with a stab wound to the right side of the neck, and a second victim — identified as the defendant’s father — with life-threatening injuries including multiple stab wounds to the neck, arm and shoulder, as well as a fractured face.
The suspect, 38-year-old Mark Anthony Cranston Jr., was still on scene when law enforcement arrived. Witness statements and surveillance led police to arrest Cranston without incident. Both victims were flown to regional trauma centers for emergency treatment.
Court filings reveal that the incident began after a conversation about mental health treatment options. Cranston allegedly became agitated, walked away and then returned to the rear deck of the residence with a large kitchen knife. According to the documents, Cranston approached one victim from behind and stabbed her in the neck. When the second victim attempted to intervene, Cranston allegedly turned the knife on him in a prolonged and violent assault.
Detectives reported finding a blood-soaked 10-inch kitchen knife at the scene, along with blood trails leading from the interior of the residence to the back deck overlooking the water. Authorities also noted the presence of scattered personal effects consistent with a struggle.
The attack was described as unprovoked and sudden. According to statements from one victim, she initially believed she had been punched before realizing she had been stabbed.
Cranston is charged with two counts each of attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault and second-degree assault. The maximum penalty for attempted first-degree murder in Maryland is life in prison.
Court records indicate that Cranston had recently been released from detention in Anne Arundel County on June 3 following an assault on his biological mother.
Cranston is currently being held without bond. Judge David W. Densford presided over his initial bail review, and a competency hearing is scheduled for July 31 in St. Mary’s District Court. Additional proceedings, including a preliminary hearing, are scheduled for Aug. 11.
